The Exorcist and the Fruit Picker

In the world of process improvement, the exorcist and the fruit picker have more in common than you might think. There are wicked problems, needing the exorcist approach and low hanging fruit problems, needing the fruit picker approach. So how do you tell the difference? Well, you're living through a wicked problem at the moment. The pandemic has an uncertain root cause and no simple solution. It's effects are wide ranging and difficult to manage and attempts at countermeasures can have unexpected, adverse consequences. By contrast, a low hanging fruit problem has a definable root cause, a simple solution and countermeasures which produce expected results. Fortunately, the "problem" distribution curve is generally skewed towards the fruit, although some of it may need a rather long ladder to reach.

So it's important to define your chosen problem carefully and to do some initial analysis, before diving headlong into an improvement project. Believing you need a fruit picker when you really need an exorcist might put you off any future attempts at improvement, which would be an unfortunate outcome.
